ABORIGINAL WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S APARTMENTS - AWCA
"Zhigidminaan Nda-niijaansag" - Anishnawbe for "Growing together with our children"
AWCA is a sister building to Ndawemo My'iingan (Native Women's Transitional House). AWCA is a program exclusively for mothers (priority is Aboriginal women ages 16 to 24 years) with children (up to 16 years) in need of a safe, stable and culture-based living environment. The AWCA program is designed to provide opportunities for personal growth and family integration.
AWCA units are self contained and families are placed according to family size. Large furnishings (kitchen appliances, beds, tables, sofa) are provided. Rent is based on family size and Ontario Works and ODSP living allowance. Residents may occupy a unit up to 18 months with their child(ren).
AWCA will work with Ndawemo My’iingan to further support single led families to move toward permanent housing and prepare for routine tenancy obligations. Mandatory programming requirements for residents include contribution to the maintenance of communal areas and active participation in internal and external activities such as employment, education, personal development and caring for children. Residents must demonstrate initiative in meeting self directed goals and compliance with tenancy and communal house rules including guest visiting hours. The same intake/referral procedure and application form is used for Zhigidminaan Nda-niijaansag and Ndawemo My'iingan. Residents of Zhigidminaan Nda-niijaansag will sign a tenancy contract upon admission.
